Evergreen
24 x 24 in. Oil on a half-inch solid birch wood panel.
North Carolina pine. They’re everywhere around here. An icon. A staple on the country roads. They line the road to the Carolina shore. They whistle at night up at Linville Gorge when a storm rolls up.
One night, camping alone at Linville Gorge, the wind woke me at 4 a.m. I could hear the pines bending and whistling fiercely—like violent ocean waves during a tropical storm. I never went back to sleep.
The evergreen giants stand at attention in my backyard near the creek trail. They're thick and don't sway like the younger ones. They blanket the woods with their needles and fill the air with their fragrance. I wrote an essay once about how human love is taller than trees. The pines remind me of such a love
